Drywall Repair and Patching for Toronto Homes

Drywall repair in Toronto often turns out to be plaster repair. Much of the old city, from Riverdale to the Annex, was built before drywall existed, so what looks like a simple hole opens onto wood lath. I check what is behind the damage before I decide how to fix it.

I am Sercan and I do the work myself, from the first cut to the final sanding. Small cracks, doorknob holes, a ceiling opened up for a plumber, or a wall that needs a full skim coat. I keep the dust contained and leave the surface ready for paint.

In pre-1950 Toronto houses the walls are horizontal wood lath with plaster pushed through it. When the keys behind the lath break off, the plaster sounds hollow and pressing on it makes things worse, so I refasten the field before I fill anything. Cracks running at an angle from door and window heads are old settlement in the brick, so they get taped, not just mudded. On narrow downtown streets I unload once and keep the site tight.

How It Runs

From Message to Finished Job

1
Photo of the damage

A picture with something for scale tells me most of it: the size, the texture on the surrounding wall, and whether the board is sound or soft. Add a note about the ceiling height and the paint colour if you know it.

2
Cut back and support

The damaged area is squared off to sound board, the cavity checked for wiring and pipe, and a backing strip or a fitted plug goes in. Nothing gets filled until there is something solid behind it.

3
Tape, coat and sand

Paper tape is bedded into compound over the joints, then two or three thin coats go on, each wider than the last, with drying time between them. Sanding is done with a light raking across the wall so shadows show up.

4
Texture, prime and paint

The surrounding texture is matched, then the patch is primed so it does not flash through the topcoat. Paint is blended into the wall or taken corner to corner where a spot repair would still catch the light.

What Affects the Price in Toronto

Size and finish move the price more than anything else. A small fill on a flat white wall is quick work. A large hole in a textured ceiling needs backing, several coats with drying time between them, texture matching and paint, which often means a return visit. Access matters, and so does ceiling height. Whether you supply the paint or I bring it makes a difference, and so does how many separate spots there are around the home. The price is agreed before I start cutting.

Nothing starts before the price is agreed. Send a photo or two with your request and I can usually quote without a site visit.

Asked in Toronto

My Toronto house is plaster, not drywall. Can you still patch it?

Yes. Most homes east and west of downtown built before the 1950s are plaster over wood lath, and I work on both. Depending on how much has let go, I either refasten and skim the existing plaster or cut back to the studs and set drywall flush with the old surface. Either way the finished wall reads flat once it is painted.
