Furniture and IKEA Assembly for Toronto Homes

Furniture assembly in Toronto usually happens in a room that was built long before flat-pack existed. I work in the old city every week, in Riverdale semis, Annex apartments and Parkdale walk-ups, where the floor slopes and the doorway is narrower than the box.

I bring the tools, sort the hardware, build the piece where it will stand, level it against the floor you actually have, and anchor it to something solid. Then the cardboard leaves with me. Free quote first, and the price is agreed before I start.

Most of the old city predates drywall. Behind the paint in a pre-1950 Toronto house there is often plaster over wood lath, which crumbles around a plain screw, so a tall wardrobe or bookcase gets a toggle or a screw driven into a located stud instead. Floors have settled too, so the levelling feet do real work, and a cabinet door that swings shut on its own is usually the house rather than the furniture. On permit-parking streets I unload fast and move the van.

How It Runs

From Message to Finished Job

1
Tell me the pieces

Send the product names or a link for each item, plus how many of each. IKEA article numbers are ideal. That tells me the build time and whether a piece needs wall fixing or extra care getting it upright.

2
Boxes in the room

Have the flat packs in the room where the furniture is going, with a clear floor space beside them. Carrying a built wardrobe through a doorway rarely works, so the build happens where the piece will live.

3
Built, checked, anchored

Parts are laid out and counted first, then the carcass goes together and gets checked for square before the back panel is fixed. Doors and drawers are adjusted, feet levelled, and anything tall is strapped to the wall.

4
Packaging taken away

Boxes get flattened, foam and plastic bagged, and the lot leaves with me unless you want to keep it. Spare fittings are bagged and left with the instructions in case you move the piece later.

What Affects the Price in Toronto

Build time is what you are paying for, and that varies more than people expect. A bedside table is quick. A tall wardrobe run with sliding doors is a serious afternoon. The number of pieces, the size of each one, whether the boxes are already in the right room, and how much wall anchoring is needed all count. Disassembly for a move usually takes less time than the original build. Whatever the list, the price or hourly rate is settled before I open a box.

Nothing starts before the price is agreed. Send a photo or two with your request and I can usually quote without a site visit.

Asked in Toronto

My place is a third-floor walk-up with a tight turn. Can the box even get up there?

Usually yes, because the box is flat. The problem is normally the finished piece, not the carton, so I carry the panels up and build in the room where it will live. If a landing is too tight even for the flat box, I open it downstairs and take the parts up in trips. Send me a photo of the stairs and I will tell you before you buy.
